If your diet is dialed in…
Your training is consistent…
And you’re still not losing fat the way you should…
You might be dealing with an invisible enemy: endotoxin.
What Is Endotoxin?
Endotoxins are toxic byproducts (specifically lipopolysaccharides, or LPS) produced by certain gut bacteria. When these bacteria overgrow and leak into the bloodstream, they trigger chronic low-grade inflammation, and that inflammation wrecks your metabolism.
The Obesity-Endotoxin Link
In one study, researchers identified three major endotoxin-producing strains in the gut of morbidly obese patients with fatty liver:
Enterobacter cloacae B29
Escherichia coli PY102
Klebsiella pneumoniae A7
When animals were given E. cloacae B29, they gained significantly more fat, especially when combined with a high-fat, inflammatory diet.
In the graph from the study, you’ll see the third bar (endotoxin-producing bacteria + control diet) shows increased weight gain, and the last bar (endotoxin-producing bacteria + high-fat diet) shows the most dramatic fat accumulation.
Another study showed that germ-free mice (mice with no gut bacteria) didn’t get fat on the same high-fat, obesogenic diet.
That means the bacteria, not just the food, are driving the fat gain.
But My Gut Feels Fine...
That’s the tricky part.
You don’t need bloating, constipation, or gas to have an endotoxin issue.
Many people with endotoxin overgrowth have zero gut symptoms, but still suffer from:
Slowed metabolism
Brain fog
Fatigue
Joint pain
Inability to lose weight despite a deficit
If your body is inflamed from the inside out, it’ll downregulate thyroid, impair mitochondrial function, and block fat loss.
Why You Can’t “Out-Diet” Endotoxin
Even with a perfect caloric deficit, endotoxin can:
Lower your resting metabolic rate
Impair insulin sensitivity
Increase fat storage hormones
Blunt energy levels and motivation
So no, lowering endotoxin won’t make you automatically lose fat…
But if you’re already in a deficit and it’s not working, fixing endotoxin can be the missing link to restoring metabolic function.
